JavaScript Array Destructuring: Techniques I Use Every Day
Destructuring is not just shorthand for pulling values out of arrays. Here are the patterns that genuinely improve my code. Array destructuring arrived in ES2015, and for the first few years I used it only for swapping variables and pulling the first element out of a function return. Once I started exploring it more deliberately, I found patterns that genuinely improved my code readability and reduced bugs. Destructuring is not just syntactic sugar. it forces you to name the values you are working with, which makes code easier to read and harder to misuse. Skipping Elements The comma syntax in destructuring lets you skip elements you do not need. When a function returns an array where only the second or third element matters, you do not have to bind names to the ones you ignore. This is cleaner than indexing into the result and reads more clearly at the call site. // Skip the first two elements const [, third] = getResult(); // Skip the middle element const [first, third] = getTriple(); I use this when working with regex match arrays where the full match at index zero is the…
