TypeScript for JavaScript Developers: A Practical Getting Started Guide
TypeScript adds type safety to JavaScript without sacrificing flexibility. Here is how I approach adding types to an existing JavaScript project. When I first tried TypeScript, I attempted to add types to everything in my codebase at once. The compiler errors were cryptic, third-party libraries had no type definitions, and I spent more time fixing type errors than writing features. The second time around, I took a gradual approach that worked much better. Starting Small I configured tsconfig.json with strict mode enabled but a few exceptions. strictNullChecks is essential. it catches the most common class of bugs where null values are used without checking. But I disabled noImplicitAny initially and enabled it file by file as I added types, rather than trying to fix hundreds of implicit any errors at once. I added TypeScript to one module at a time, starting with utility functions and pure data transformations. These have the clearest data flow and benefit most from type checking. Components with complex state and side effects came later, once the team was comfortable with the type system.
